Une communauté réunie par l’artL’histoire de l’Association des artistes du Lakeshore commence à l’automne 1956, lorsqu’un groupe d’artistes de la région se réunit autour d’une vision commune : créer une association regroupant des artistes professionnels et des artistes de calibre professionnel de Lachine à Hudson.
La première réunion a lieu le 23 octobre 1956 et rassemble 11 membres qui croient en l’importance de créer une communauté artistique où les artistes peuvent se rencontrer, partager leur travail et contribuer à la vie culturelle de la région. De ce modeste début est née une organisation artistique dont l’histoire s’étend maintenant sur sept décennies. |
A Community Built Around ArtThe story of the Lakeshore Association of Artists began in the fall of 1956, when a group of local artists came together with a shared vision: to establish an association bringing together professional artists and artists of professional calibre from Lachine to Hudson.
The first meeting was held on October 23, 1956, bringing together 11 members who believed in the importance of creating an artistic community where artists could meet, share their work, and contribute to the cultural life of the region. From that small beginning grew an artistic organization with a history spanning seven decades. |

The article, headed “Local Artists Association Is Formed,” reports on the newly organized association and its first meeting, held at the home of Mr. Eric Poulson in Dorval.
At that meeting, Mr. Noel Hollier served as chairman, assisted by Rev. P. W. Jones and Mr. Eric Poulson. The first officers elected to guide the new association were: Founding Executive — 1956 President

De 1960 à aujourd’huiÀ peine quatre ans après sa fondation, l’AAL amorce ce qui allait devenir l’une de ses traditions les plus durables.
La première exposition extérieure de l’AAL a lieu en septembre 1960, sur les magnifiques terrains de Stewart Hall à Pointe-Claire. Ce qui a commencé comme une exposition extérieure est devenu au fil du temps un événement annuel majeur sur le Lakeshore. Au fil des ans, cette exposition colorée a attiré de nombreux visiteurs de partout dans la région. Elle est devenue un rendez-vous important du calendrier culturel local, tout en témoignant de l’engagement de longue date de l’AAL envers la communauté, notamment par le don d’une partie des ventes d’œuvres à des organismes de bienfaisance locaux. Le succès de ces expositions illustre l’évolution de la vision originale de l’association: réunir les artistes, mettre en valeur l’excellence artistique et faire de l’art un moyen de renforcer et de soutenir la communauté. |
From 1960 to TodayJust four years after its formation, the LAA began what would become one of its most enduring traditions.
The LAA’s outdoor exhibition was first held in September 1960 on the beautiful grounds of Stewart Hall in Pointe-Claire. What began as an outdoor exhibition has grown into a major annual event on the Lakeshore. Over the years, this colourful exhibition has attracted large audiences and visitors from throughout the region. It has become an important part of the local cultural calendar while reflecting the LAA’s longstanding commitment to giving back to the community by donating a portion of art sales to local charities. The success of these exhibitions demonstrates how the association’s original vision has evolved: bringing artists together, showcasing artistic excellence, and using art as a way to strengthen and support the community. |
L’art au service de la communautéAujourd’hui, l’AAL est reconnue pour ses deux expositions annuelles, qui allient excellence artistique et engagement communautaire.
Exposition d’automne L’exposition d’automne traditionnelle se tient à Stewart Hall à Pointe-Claire, perpétuant la tradition des expositions extérieures amorcée en 1960. Une partie des recettes est remise à On Rock, afin de soutenir son travail au sein de la communauté. Exposition du printemps Présentée à la Ferme Fritz à Baie-d’Urfé, l’exposition du printemps met en valeur les œuvres des artistes de l’AAL tout en remettant une partie importante de ses recettes à NOVA Ouest-de-l’Île. Ensemble, ces expositions témoignent à la fois du talent et du dévouement de nos artistes et de notre volonté d’avoir une incidence positive sur la communauté. À ce jour, l’AAL est fière d’avoir remis plus d’un million de dollars à des organismes communautaires locaux, contribuant ainsi de façon concrète au mieux-être de la région. L’AAL est fière que ses expositions soient devenues bien plus que des occasions de découvrir et d’acheter des œuvres originales. Ce sont des moments où l’art, la communauté et la générosité se rencontrent. |
Art With a PurposeToday, the LAA is renowned for its two annual exhibitions, combining artistic excellence with meaningful community support.
Fall Exhibition The traditional Fall Exhibition takes place at Stewart Hall in Pointe-Claire, continuing the outdoor exhibition tradition that began there in 1960. A portion of the proceeds benefits On Rock, supporting its work in the community. Spring Exhibition Held at Fritz Farm in Baie-d’Urfé, the Spring Exhibition showcases the work of LAA artists while donating a significant portion of its proceeds to NOVA Ouest-de-l’Île. Together, these exhibitions highlight both the talent and dedication of our artists and our commitment to making a positive impact in the community. To date, the LAA has proudly given back more than $1 million to local community support organizations, helping make a meaningful difference across the region. The LAA is proud that its exhibitions have become more than opportunities to view and purchase original artwork. They are occasions where art, community, and charitable giving come together. |

Des générations d’artistes ont contribué leur créativité, leur passion, leur talent et leur énergie à l’association. Malgré les changements au fil des années et l’évolution des pratiques artistiques, l’esprit d’origine — réunir les artistes — demeure au cœur de l’AAL. L’exposition extérieure qui a vu le jour à Stewart Hall en 1960 n’est qu’un exemple de la façon dont une initiative lancée par les premiers membres est devenue une tradition appréciée de la communauté. Aujourd’hui, l’association continue de réunir plus de 50 artistes qui partagent une passion pour les arts visuels et le désir de contribuer à la communauté. |
Our Continuing LegacyWhat began with 11 members in 1956 has evolved into an enduring community of artistic expression, exhibitions, learning, friendship, and community involvement.
Generations of artists have contributed their creativity, passion, talent, and energy to the association. Through changing times and evolving artistic practices, the original spirit of bringing artists together has remained at the heart of the LAA. The outdoor exhibition that began in 1960 at Stewart Hall is just one example of how an initiative started by the early members has grown into a beloved community tradition. Today, the association continues to bring together more than 50 artists who share a passion for visual art and a desire to contribute to the community. |

Nous rendons hommage aux 11 membres qui se sont réunis le 23 octobre 1956, ainsi qu’au comité exécutif fondateur qui a posé les premières pierres de l’association. Nous nous souvenons des artistes qui leur ont succédé, des bénévoles qui ont donné de leur temps, des membres qui ont organisé les expositions et les activités, ainsi que des personnes qui ont cru en l’importance de maintenir une communauté artistique dynamique. Chaque génération a ajouté un nouveau chapitre à l’histoire de l’AAL. Aujourd’hui, l’esprit de camaraderie, d’excellence artistique et d’engagement envers la communautédemeure bien vivant. |
The history of the Lakeshore Association of Artists is a history of people.
We honour the 11 members who gathered on October 23, 1956, and the founding Executive who took the first steps toward creating the association. We remember the artists who followed them, the volunteers who gave their time, the members who organized exhibitions and activities, and the supporters who believed in the importance of maintaining a strong artistic community. Every generation has added another chapter to the LAA story. Today, the spirit of camaraderie, artistic excellence, and concern for the community continues. |
